Demi Lovato has opened up about breaking her six-year sobriety battle in a new song titled Sober.

On the emotive track, the star sings nakedly honest lyrics such as: ‘Call me when it’s over, ’cause I’m dying inside.’

Elsewhere she confesses: ‘We’ve been down this road before, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.’

The star released the lyric video below after teasing new music on Twitter for weeks. Last month she tweeted: ‘Can you handle the truth? #newmusiccomingsoon’, leading fans to speculate her new album could be called Truth.

‘I don’t have to defend anything’

Demi has long been open about her battles with mental health and alcohol addiction. Back in March, shortly after celebrating six years sober, she addressed a fan on social media who speculated whether she had relapsed.

Commenting on a party photo of her circulating, in which she was holding a drink and standing with openly lesbian singer Hayley Kiyoko, the Skyscraper singer said: ‘I don’t have to defend anything but it was Red Bull.’

Hayley later commented on Instagram: ‘I didn’t even see the cup that demi was holding up and i’m not accusing her of anything. If she says it’s redbull, it is. I’m a big fan of her myself and I would never accuse her of that.’

She furthermore added: ‘I’m proud of her that she’s been clean for so damn long and I don’t want anyone to doubt on her while she’s going so strong.’

Speaking in her documentary Simply Complicated last year, Demi revealed she is open to dating both men and women.

‘I am on the dating app with both guys and girls,’ she said. ‘I am open to human connection. So whether that’s through a male or female, it doesn’t matter to me.’

[Verse one]

I got no excuses
For all of these goodbyes
Call me when it’s over
‘Cause I’m dying inside
Wake me up when the shakes are gone
And the cold sweats disappear
Call me when it’s over
And myself has reappeared

[Pre-chorus]
I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know why
I do it every, every, every time
It’s only when I’m lonely
Sometimes I just wanna cave
And I don’t wanna fight
I try and I try and I try and I try and I try
Just hold me, I’m lonely

[Chorus]

Momma, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore
And daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor
To the ones who never left me
We’ve been down this road before
I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore

[Verse two]

I’m sorry to my future love
For the man that left my bed
For making love the way I saved for you inside my head
And I’m sorry for the fans I lost
Who watched me fall again
I wanna be a role model
But I’m only human

[Pre-chorus]
I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know why
I do it every, every, every time
It’s only when I’m lonely
Sometimes I just wanna cave
And I don’t wanna fight
I try and I try and I try and I try and I try
Just hold me, I’m lonely

[Chorus]
Momma, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore
And daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor
To the ones who never left me
We’ve been down this road before
I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore
I’m not sober anymore

[Outro]
I’m sorry that I’m here again
I promise I’ll get help
It wasn’t my intention
I’m sorry to myself
