VH1 is honoring Charlie Craig and David Mullins, the gay couple in the US Supreme Court’s recent case about a wedding cake and discrimination.
The network is hosting their fifth annual VH1 Trailblazers Honors tonight at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The special will air next week, on 28 June.
Other honorees of the evening include Danica Roem; Ryan Murphy; the ACLU; Opal Tometi, co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter; and more.
Craig and Mullins will be presented with the Everyday Trailblazers award in recognition of their fight against discrimination.
When the couple went to Masterpiece Cakeshop in Colorado for a wedding cake, baker Jack Phillips refused on the basis of his religion.
How did the Supreme Court rule?
A few weeks ago, the Justices ruled for Phillips in a narrow 7-2 decision.
They said nothing about discrimination or free speech. Instead, the opinion was laser-focused on the particulars of this case. In a majority opinion written by Justice Kennedy, they said that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed ‘hostility’ towards Phillips’ religion. Therefore, the case, essentially, was null and void from the start.
Therefore, cases and arguments about businesses’ discriminating on the basis of sexuality and gender identity remain. There are no clear federal laws protecting LGBTQ people in the US from this.
