In 2015, Greece enacted legislation legalizing same-sex civil unions, marking itself as the 26th European nation to take such a step. The law affords particular rights and benefits to same-sex couples, but currently, they do not have the authorization to adopt children. This week, Greece’s center-right government declared its plan to introduce a bill allowing same-sex marriage, despite facing resistance from the influential Orthodox Church and legislators. In a recent discussion, the current Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, proclaimed his government’s goal of introducing marriage equality via law-making. He didn’t give a precise time frame but stated that it wouldn’t consume a considerable amount of time. Mitsotakis declared that marital relationships will not be subject to discrimination due to sexual orientation. He explained that while the law allows same-sex partners to adopt children, it does not authorize surrogate parenting. He further stated that it is extremely improbable for women to become instant baby-making machines on command.
