2023: A Year of Legislative and Social Challenges for the LGBTQ Community

For instance, same-sex activities could result in a 20-year jail sentence or even the death penalty.

The right of the transgender community to participate in sports emerged as another contentious issue in 2023. Laws banning transgender athletes in schools and elite sports became commonplace, although some were challenged in court. Moreover, there was a noticeable uptick in laws intended to limit the visibility and expression of LGBTQ identities in public spaces, further restricting their freedoms.
