Netflix has renewed Grace and Frankie, confirming the season will welcome RuPaul as a guest star.
The Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin comic genius will return for a fifth season. But Drag Race ringleader RuPaul will also join the cast, guest-starring as Benjamin Le Day as a ‘formidable and quick-witted adversary.’
And it all came about after a classicly ‘Grace and Frankie’ styled Twitter conversation between RuPaul and Jane Fonda:
But Ru Paul is not the first big guest star to join the show.
In season four, Friends alumni Lisa Kudrow joined the cast for a recurring role as Grace’s longtime manicurist Sheree.
Season five will drop in 2019.
Gaining in popularity and critical acclaim
Grace and Frankie’s suburban and happily married lives flip upside down at the start of the show, when their husbands come out as gay.
It’s the warmth and equal tragedy of this storyline which quickly caught the attention of the LGBTI community. However, its the show’s ability to maneuver difficult topics around aging in a humorous and powerful manner that has been capturing the imagination of its wider audience.
Moreover, it’s gone on to pick up critical acclaim and award nominations, including four Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
