EVANSVILLE, In. (WEHT) – An open discussion was held on Monday night on the state of the LGBTQ community both on the local and national levels.

The event was meant to open a conversation about the state of the movement and reflect on wins and losses in recent activism efforts. Officials also highlighted the importance of 2024 as an election year amid the recent passage of laws that they say are an attack on the community.

Featured speaker Cathy Renna, the communications director for the National LGBTQ Taskforce, says it’s important to travel to different areas to not only raise awareness, but also bring people together.

“We have to also balance how hard this can be, how challenging this can be, especially in a place like Indiana where rights are under direct attack,” says Renna. “It’s also important to come together in joy and celebration and take care of each other.”
