Pride on the river: LGBTQ community celebrates with picnic

Written by

ASHLAND Searing heat didn’t deter a parade of individuals and families from attending Ashland Ky Pride’s fourth annual picnic on the Ashland Riverfront.

Organizers estimated 250 or more attended the picnic, which featured live musical performances, speakers, vendors and food.

Perhaps most importantly, the event brought togetherness, Luauna Daniels, a board member of Ashland Ky Pride, said.

“We want acceptance for all the community and support for all the community, not just the LGBTQ community,” she said.

Mayor Matt Perkins, who spoke at the picnic, agreed.

“For so long, our (LGBTQ) community didn’t feel welcomed or acknowledged,” Perkins said. “I think it’s important to represent and recognize and celebrate every individual in this community.”

Commissioner Josh Blanton and Sean Farrington also were among the speakers.

Ashland Ky Pride vice president Desire’ Layne said she’s pleased with the turnout, especially considering the heat. She said she thinks the picnic is important for the children struggling with sexual identity.

“It’s for the queer youth, so they know and they see we exist,” she said, noting that can help them to know they have support. “It also brings the community together.”

Performers scheduled at the event included Dottie the Psychic, Tia Woods, Zoee Mochenelle, Kimberly Lourainne, Polly Pinhead, Diva, Billy Britton, Xan Archy Chaoss and Averi Aycock.
