In a powerful segment on The Daily Show for #SpiritDay, Laverne Cox addressed the deep-rooted issues of anti-LGBTQ legislation and its direct link to bullying faced by queer youth.
She explained how laws targeting the transgender community not only marginalize individuals but also embolden bullying and discrimination, creating a hostile environment for LGBTQ people, especially young individuals.
“I’m wearing purple in honor of Spirit Day, the day we raise awareness and fight against anti LGBTQ bullying,” Cox said.
“Now when you think of bullying you probably think it’s happening in schools, and you would be right but these days the bullying is also happening from people way more immature than teenagers, politicians.”
Cox stressed that #SpiritDay is a vital moment to unite and push back against this hate, calling on allies to actively engage in the fight for equality.
Her message also serves as a reminder that the battle for LGBTQ acceptance, especially for transgender people, is far from over.
“The real bullies aren’t in the schoolyard; they’re on Capitol Hill,” The Daily Show said in a social media post.
Since its inception, #SpiritDay has become a global phenomenon, empowering individuals, schools, and businesses to take a stand against bullying. The event gives visibility to the unique struggles LGBTQ+ youth face, highlighting the importance of allyship and advocacy. Purple also symbolizes spirit on the LGBTQ Pride flag.
