The CW’s upcoming reboot of Charmed found its first sister — Mel, a witch with the power of freezing time. Fruitvale Station’s Melonie Diaz landed the starring role.
Set in a modern-day college town, the series is a ‘fierce, funny, feminist reboot’ of the original show which ran from 1998 to 2006.
Like its predecessor, the show follows three sisters with alliterative names and magical powers.
Earlier this month, bios for each of the three sisters came to light.
The bio describes Diaz’s character Mel Pruitt as a ‘strong-willed feminist’ who ‘feels deeply’. She’s in her mid-20s, a lesbian, and is the older sister of Madison. After a tragic accident, Mel becomes ‘angry, defiantly unkempt, even violent, pushing away those who might help her, including her girlfriend, Detective Soo Ji’.
Who’s ready for new witchy times?
Jane the Virgin’s Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin wrote the script along with Jane creator Jennie Urman. Brad Silberling is directing the pilot — a full series remains up in the air.
Previously, Diaz starred in the thriller The Belko Experiment and the upcoming comedy Gringo.
A lot of fans, however, are not excited about the new show. A hashtag campaign #STOPCharmedReboot is going around Twitter. With Hollywood’s current reboot culture, this is a common reaction.
Others, though, are sending their support and excitement Diaz’s way.
