Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is reportedly turning himself into the New York Police Department (NYPD). Sources say charges of sexual misconduct might befall him as soon as Friday (25 May).
This news follows a Wall Street Journal report revealing that federal prosecutors in New York opened a sex crimes investigation into Weinstein.
He is also under investigation in Los Angeles and London.
Weinstein’s New York attorney, Benjamin Brafma, declined to comment.
Kicked off the #MeToo Movement
The allegations and accusations against Weinstein was one of the first high-proile investigations that launched the current #MeToo movement.
Some of his accusers include Cara Delevingne and Salma Hayek, who says she was forced to film a lesbian sex scene in an unprofessional manner.
Since then, several people have come forward with allegations. Anthony Rapp accused Kevin Spacey, while Ellen Page says a director outed and sexually harassed her.
In Hollywood alone, 94% of women say they have been sexually harassed or assaulted.
All of this has led to Time’s Up, a new initiative aimed at fighting this systemic inequality and oppression.
