Oh… my… god! Reese Witherspoon is reportedly nearing a deal to reprise her iconic role as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3.

Deadline reports that MGM is working on a third installment with most of the original creative team returning as well.

The first film was released in 2001 and has since become a major touchstone for women across the world. Sources say original screenwriters Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah are in talks to write this new film.

Original producer Marc Platt is also returning, this time joined by Witherspoon and her production banner, Hello Sunshine.

Now they just need a director.

In 2003, the sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde came out. Both had tremendous success at the box office. The original made $141 million worldwide on an $18 million budget, and the sequel grossed $124 million on a $45 million budget.

The first film is based off the Amanda Brown novel of the same name.

A timely move

In the current culture of the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements, a female empowerment movie of this nature is perfectly timed. Witherspoon has also been a vocal advocate for both movements since the start.

Fans are thrilled.

They’re discussing casting possibilities already. Like Ariana Grande, given her amazing Jennifer Coolidge impression.

People are also excited about the news in tandem with the new Dolly Parton project, and especially them coinciding with Pride.

It also helps with the Supreme Court decision today.

Others want to see updated representation in the new film.
