In a new interview, Tessa Thompson addresses both her sexuality and relationship with Janelle Monáe.
While speaking with PORTEREdit, Thompson credits her family for her free attitude towards her own sexuality and attraction to people.
‘I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be,’ she said.
Then she explicitly discussed her own sexuality, coming out as bisexual.
‘I’m attracted to men and also to women. If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion.’
People have been speculating about Thompson’s sexuality, and, consequently, her relationship with Monáe for some time.
It came to new heights when Thompson starred in two of Monáe’s recent videos. Both Make Me Feel and Pynk had major queer vibes.
Then Thompson joined Monáe in the film accompanying her new album. In it, they played lovers in a futuristic world.
‘We vibrate on the same frequency’
In the same interview, Thompson talked about her relationship with Monáe and said it doesn’t bother her that people speculate.
‘We love each other deeply,’ she added. ‘We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency.’
She also talked about her own privilege, and the public platform she possesses.
‘That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself,’ Thompson said. ‘That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself.
‘But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?’
About their status, it remains private, with some questions.
‘It’s tricky, because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence,’ she said.
