After what seemed like an infinite wait, Netflix released the trailer for season 6 of Orange Is The New Black today (9 July).

The new season will hit the screens on 27 July. On that date, viewers will finally be able to binge on the show in the usual 13-episode format.

Before going into the details of the brand new images, here’s a quick recap of what our favorite inmates were up to when season 5 ended.

The riot

The final episode played out over three days during a riot at Litchfield Penitentiary, still the one and only minimum security prison where we wouldn’t mind spending a weekend.

Ten of the prisons’ finest, including Alex (Laura Prepon), Piper (Taylor Schilling), and Nicky (Natasha Lyonne), were in Frieda’s (Dale Soules) bunker. CERT officers had just broken into it, while the rest of Litchfield’s inmates were heading to new prisons.

The first official teaser for season six, which dropped on 5 June, showed us the prison devastated after the riot.

‘Bye bye, Litch’ reads the tweet, featuring images of the desert penitentiary. The voiceover hints at a ‘whole new world’ viewers need to expect to see in the new season.

The new trailer for Orange Is The New Black

Netflix has since released a new title sequence for the show. The clip offers a glimpse of the new prison which is now home to our beloved orange-wearing bunch.

The streaming provider then finally released the full new trailer on 9 July. It is already available to subscribers on Netflix and will be released on the show’s social media channels soon.

Where is Alex?

The two-minute clip shows Piper and the others adjusting to the reality of the new prison. All the usual faces are there, but one: where is Alex?

While the police are determined to get the truth about the riot out of the stubborn, iron-willed inmates, the show’s antiheroines are trying desperately to survive in the new environment.

After some viewers complained about the lack of originality of the past two seasons, the change in the usual setting might be a boost for OITNB. Leaving Litchfield for a completely new penitentiary might just give the audience the fresh element they wanted. We’ll just have to wait until the end of July to find out.
