Taylor Swift had a surprise for fans at her Gillette Stadium concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts last night (26 July). During the performance, Hayley Kiyoko joined her onstage for an impromptu performance.
The pair sang Kiyoko’s hit single Curious from this year’s album Expectations.
Swift posted a video of the performance on her Instagram.
‘UM @hayleykiyoko THAT WAS INSANE!’ she enthused in the caption.
She added: ‘So stoked this was your first stadium performance, and you absolutely killed it.’
Kiyoko shared her own video post and wrote, in all-caps: ‘DO NOT KNOW HOW TO COMPREHEND WHAT JUST HAPPENED. PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANK YOU.’
Swift and Kiyoko have had each other’s backs before.
When Kiyoko made a comment about Swift singing about men in all her songs, in response to execs being unhappy about Kiyoko’s songs being all about girls, Swift’s fans came for her.
Swift, however, quickly came to Kiyoko’s defense. She wrote on Tumblr: ‘We should applaud artists who are brave enough to tell their honest romantic narrative through their art, and the fact is that I’ve never encountered homophobia and she has.’
The power of supporting each other
Kiyoko shared another photo of the pair onstage.
‘It’s really hard to put into words how I feel and what just happened,’ she wrote in the caption.
‘I feel overwhelmed. Taylor, you reached out to someone who dreams of being heard and understood. Thank you for giving me one of the biggest gifts of my life, opportunity. And thank you for showing me that these crazy dreams of mine are possible.
‘I couldn’t be more grateful. We keep climbing :)’
It’s also not the first time Swift has had LGBTI artist join her for concerts.
In May, Troye Sivan performed with Swift and used the opporunity to announce his upcoming album.
