A single father from Thailand wore a dress last week to a school Mother’s Day event where his sons attend.
Chatchai ‘Sam’ Panuthai, from Kanchanaburi, decided to don the dress so his two sons — Imsome, 3, and Ozone, 5 — would not feel left out.
Panuthai’s friend, Kornpat Ae Sukhom, captured the precious and meaningful interactions in a video on Facebook. So far, the video has over 6 million views and 15,000 reactions.
Thailand celebrates Mother’s Day on 12 August. It is the same day as the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who is also considered a mother to all Thai people.
As is tradition in Thai culture, children kneel at the feet of their mother on this special day. As they do this, they share their love and gratitude for their mother. They also present their mother with white jasmine flowers or garlands.
In the video above, one of Panuthai’s sons does just this and he’s seen holding a garland.
Cue the emotions
Kornpat told BuzzFeed News that Panuthai wanted to make sure his sons didn’t feel left out on the day.
‘Everyone enjoyed it and all laughed and took photos with him,’ she said. ‘His two sons weren’t quite sure what was going on and why Dad was wearing a dress.’
Kornpat often helps Panuthai watch his sons. Panuthai divorced from their mother and she now lives in Europe.
