Newquay will celebrate its LGBTI community with the annual Cornwall Pride march, happening in one of the most stunning coastal locations of the UK.
Walking groups and floats will parade through the streets of Newquay on Saturday 25 August. The event will be family-friendly and free to attend.
The most southwestern county in England already hosted a Pride tour in June, bringing a positive message of acceptance to 11 towns.
Cornwall Pride is necessary
Earlier this summer, however, vandals pooed on one of Newquay’s Pride rainbow benches to write a homophobic message. The disgusting incident sparked outrage and is proof of how much Pride is necessary for smaller communities.
The parade on Saturday will wave the rainbow flag proudly to protest against anti-LGBTI discrimination.
The gathering point is Towan Beach at 12pm. Nonetheless, marchers are advised to arrive an hour earlier to ensure the parade will start on time.
The route
Starting from Towan Beach, the parade will then head into Beach Road and Gover Lane and join Bank Street.
Once in Bank Street, it will make its way through the pedestrian street and join East Street.
Marchers and floats will then turn left into Bridge Road and then left again into Trebarwith Crescent and make its way to the Killacourt at 1pm.
‘Onwards together’
Queen drummer Roger Taylor, the patron of the event, expressed his support to the LGBTI community.
‘I am indeed proud to be associated with Cornwall Pride. To me this significantly represents the fact that Cornwall is truly part of the 21st century, which must be a positive change for the better. Onwards together.’
The Rainbow Fest
The Rainbow Fest is Cornwall Pride’s afternoon event. Held at the Killacourt in Newquay, it is a free event with live music from 1pm to 7pm.
There will be a licensed bar area, stalls from various organizations, business and groups within Cornwall and the UK offering advice and support as well as fun games to play, face painting and more.
Acts include Daisy Clark, X Factor Benji Matthews, and Joe Hurworth. Britain’s Got Talent drag queen Vicki Vivacious will be Cornwall Pride’s host for the evening.
The Moonbow Party
Cornwall Pride’s afertparty will be hosted at Tall Trees in Newquay from 8pm until 2am. The event is ticketed.
The committee has teamed up with Great Western Railway and First Kernow to make sure it’s even easier to take part Cornwall Pride in Newquay this year. A fleet of free shuttle buses will operate between St. Austell and Par to offer outbound and return connections with Newquay station. All you need is your GWR train ticket.
