Elton John appears to try his hand at rapping for a new ad, but all is not as it seems.

The clip for Snickers sees the star at a rap contest house party in a sparkly red suit. At the crucial moment, he breaks into a rendition of one of his biggest, poppiest hits…

The track in question is Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. His duet with Kiki Dee of course hit number one on both sides of the Atlantic in 1976.

When another attendee insists Elt eats a Snickers, he adds: ‘You always lose your edge when you’re hungry’. Then the star morphs into US rap artist Boogie.

Speaking about the ad, Elton commented: ‘Most people already know I’ve long been an advocate of hip hop and that’s why I wanted be a part of this.’

He furthermore added: I got to hang out with Boogie and some great hip hop talent from the UK too! Moreover, I love the direction the new Snickers ads have humorously portrayed being off your game when you’re hungry, but in a way that’s current and relevant to young people, especially considering hip hop is one of the biggest music genres in the world today.’

The ad hits TV screens from 1 September.

‘Eminem was never homophobic’

Elton has indeed been long-known for love of hip hop – especially Eminem. Speaking last year of his 2001 Grammys duet with the Stan rapper, he said: ‘I’m always a supporter of the people that are getting trashed. For me Eminem was never homophobic.’

He furthermore added: ‘I listened to the whole of the Marshall Mathers album when I drove to a show in South Hampton and I was floored by it. And I thought how could anyone think this is… he’s just writing about the way things are. Not how he thinks but the way things are.’

In other Elton news, this week the Rocket Man singer and his family shared photos of themselves on vacation with the Beckhams in France.
