On Sunday (6 May), Twitter user @MinovskyArticle tweeted out a story about his 88-year-old grandmother shutting down her son’s homophobia.

In the tweet, Minovsky explains their father was ranting about how ‘LGBTQIA+ identities were getting too confusing to keep up with’.

However, the grandmother heard the comment and quickly shut it down.

According to the tweet, the grandmother responded: ‘The way things are now is better than when people had to hide away or killed themselves because nobody understood who they were. Respect costs you nothing.’

Slow clap.

Over 180,000 users have liked the tweet and almost 51,000 have re-tweeted it.

A woke grandma?

Minovsky added about their grandmother’s sense of respect.

They don’t describe their grandmother as ‘woke’, but explain that she has both bisexual and transgender grandkids.

She’s been ‘open minded and willing to learn if it means her family is happy’.

Minovsky ends by saying: ‘That’s all any of us can really ask for.’

Much needed compassion

Minovsky’s tweetes resonated with people. Some sent their own blessing to the grandmother, others shared stories of their own loving grandparents.

For this user, their nana researched sexuality to be more understanding.

Another grandma supports their grandchild exploring their gender identity.

This Catholic grandfather had his grandson bring his boyfriend over for dinner.

‘Woke-ish grandfolks exist.’

Others ask the important question.

Another even hosted their son’s gay wedding themselves!

Putting goodness into the world, one ‘woke’ grandparent at a time.
