Roseanne is officially coming back in a new iteration, only weeks after ABC canceled the revival. The whole cast is returning for the new show, now titled The Conners. That is, everyone except Roseanne Barr.
The Disney-owned network first announced a revival of the 90s family sitcom last year. It quickly became a hot-button topic among television fans, with many wondering if it was necessary, especially due to the conservative figure Barr is now.
Barr is exactly who caused the cancellation in the first place.
After a series of racist and controversial tweets from Barr, ABC pulled the plug on the show.
Many were glad there were consequences for Barr’s words, but expressed regret for the loss of hundreds of people’s jobs. Now, however, that regret is no longer.
After making a deal with executive producer Tom Werner, ABC gave The Conners a straight-to-series 10-episode order.
Barr will have no financial or creative input in the show. She does retain the rights to her own character, though, and any future spinoffs or reboots.
What will the new show entail?
ABC describes the show as focusing on the Conners who, ‘after a sudden turn of events, are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before’.
Original cast members John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman are all returning for the spinoff. Other cast members will be revealed at a later date.
‘We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience,’ they all said in a joint statement.
‘We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.’
ABC also said the show will continue to tackle contemporary issues.
The Conners will debut in the fall.
