Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon is donating a pair of skates and performance outfit to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
Rippon won a bronze medal at this year’s PyeongChang Winter Olympics as part of the team figure skating event. With the win, he became the first openly gay male athlete to win a medal at the Winter Olympics.
He’s donating his sparkly teal outfit from his free skate, as well as a pair of skates, with his name engraved on the blades.
‘Pretty cool to soon have something on display in the American History Museum,’ he wrote.
This is the free skate he performed throughout the season, and finally in PyeongChang.

Rippon added about his donations: ‘Now I just need to convince someone that they need to be the next ruby slippers.’
An original pair of ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz is one of the most popular and iconic items on display at the museum. Recently, the museum removed them from display so researchers could work on preserving the slippers.
The Smithsonian Institution founded the American History Museum in 1964. Its collection puts forth the heritage of the United States in various areas, including politics, entertainment, scientific, and more.
Beyond the slippers, some of the most famous items on display are the original Star-Spangled Banner and a car from Disneyland’s Dumbo ride.
Now, Rippon gets to join those heights.
