Amandla Stenberg has publicly revealed she identifies as gay for the first time.
The Hunger Games star discussed their sexuality in a new interview. In it, she gives the classic line: ‘‘*Insert Ellen DeGeneres’ TIME Magazine cover squat and wide smile* Yep I’m gay.’
Amandla has publicly identified as queer, bisexual, pansexual and gender fluid in the past.
Speaking to Wonderland, The Darkest Minds star said: ‘‘I’m grateful for how being gay has afforded me this ability to experience and understand love and sex, and therefore life, in an expansive and infinite way.’
Amandla’s film credits include Everything, Everything, As You Are and Rio 2.
‘My sexuality is not a byproduct of my past experiences with men’
They furthermore added: ‘The continual process of unlearning heteronormativity and internalized homophobia can be difficult, but one of the biggest blessings lies in the magic that comes from having to understand love outside the confines of learned heterosexual roles.’
Amandla also added: ‘My sexuality is not a byproduct of my past experiences with men, who I have loved, but rather a part of myself I was born with and love deeply.’
Confirming she considers the interview a ‘coming out’ moment, Amandla showed gratitude to the writer on Instagram, saying: ‘Thank you to KP for providing me with such a safe space to come out.’
