Amandla Stenberg has discussed recently coming out as gay, saying: ‘I wanted to be transparent’.
The Hunger Games actress clarified her sexuality in June to Wonderland.
She said at the time: ‘I’m grateful for how being gay has afforded me this ability to experience and understand love and sex, and therefore life, in an expansive and infinite way.’
Amandla also said in June: ‘I was so overcome with this profound sense of relief when I realized that I’m gay – not bi, not pan, but gay – with a romantic love for women.’
‘Stand with pride’
Amandla opened up about her nerves about the decision to talk publicly about her sexuality in a new interview with Variety.
‘I wanted to be transparent about who I was,’ she explained. ‘And stand with pride and hopefully, through that, make other people feel proud of their identities.’
The Hate U Give star furthermore added: ‘There was definitely a little bit of nerves.
‘But I’m lucky to grow up in an environment where I don’t have to feel repercussions for being myself and I can feel comfortable exploring and finding my truth. I wasn’t afraid because I had a lot of support around me.’
Amandla is also known for films including Rio 2 and Taste of Romance.
Her upcoming movie Where Hands Touch, set in Germany around the time of the Holocaust, is currently provoking much discussion.
The film explores a romance between a biracial woman and a member of the Hitler Youth.
Where Hands Touch is out 14 September in the US.
