Andy Murray has become the first top male tennis player to speak out against retired Australian player Margaret Court’s latest protest against same-sex marriage.
Murray, currently ranked number one in the world, was asked about the controversy while competing at the French Open where he is seeded first.
‘I don’t see why anyone has a problem with two people who love each other getting married,’ the reigning Wimbledon champion tells The Sun.
‘You know, if it’s two men, two women, that’s great. I don’t see why it should matter. It’s not anyone else’s business.’
Murray was coached for a few years by former Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo who is a lesbian.
Court, the winner of a record 24 grand slam singles titles, made headlines last week when she announced that she intended to boycott Qantas Airlines in the future because of its public stance in support of gay marriage.
Court, 74, expanded her anti-LGBTI views this week when she said in an interview that transgender children are the product of parents who ‘don’t care.’
‘If you haven’t got parents who bring you up that way and you have parents that don’t care, and you’re hurt and offended if somebody’s saying something to you, your child can just start to think “Well maybe I am a girl”, when they’re a boy, or “Maybe I’m a boy and I’m a girl”.’
