Lucas Hedges, the star of conversion therapy movie Boy Erased, has opened up about his sexuality.
Similarly to Chloe Grace Moretz, starring in conversion therapy drama The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Hedges is well aware that playing gay would raise questions about his own identity.
‘I owe it to this part to speak as honestly as possible,’ he said in an interview with Vulture.
‘In the early stages of my life, some of the people I was most infatuated with were my closest male friends. That was the case through high school, and I think I was always aware that while for the most part I was attracted to women, I existed on a spectrum.’
He then revealed he doesn’t identify as totally straight.
‘I felt ashamed that I wasn’t 100% because it was clear that one side of sexuality presents issues, and the other doesn’t as much,’ he said.
‘I recognize myself as existing on that spectrum: not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual.’
Will Lucas Hedges get his second Oscar nod?
Hedges received an Oscar nod for his role in Manchester By The Sea, released in 2016. He might double that this year with his performance in Boy Erased, starring alongside Troye Sivan.
The 21-year-old also starred in Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel by director Wes Anderson.
Recently, he shared the screen with Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet in Lady Bird, directed by Greta Gerwig. Hedges portrays the boyfriend of the protagonist Christine Lady Bird (Ronan), Neil. His character struggles to come to terms with his own sexual identity when he is caught kissing another guy.
