Carla Patricia Flores-Pavón is the 9th trans person murdered in the United States this year
Carla Patricia Flores-Pavón, a 26-year-old trans woman from Dallas, Texas, became the ninth trans woman to be murdered in America this year.
Flores-Pavón was found dead in her apartment on Wednesday, 9 May. Police believe she was strangled to death.
During a press conference, Deputy Chief Thomas Castro said witnesses saw a Latino man with short, dark hair leaving her apartment shortly before she was found unconscious. Flores-Pavón was pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital.
A source told CBS11 that Flores-Pavón met up with a man she had spoken to in a chat room.
‘There is no evidence at this time to suggest this homicide was the result of a hate crime,’ police said.
In mourning
Friends of Flores-Pavón paid tribute to her on social media.
‘It hurts so much, you were a good person,’ wrote Gia York Herrera in Spanish on Facebook. ‘I met you very little but it was always very nice to chat and laugh together…[I will] remember you with love and with that smile you always had.’
A vigil for Flores-Pavón is being held at a Dallas church on Sunday, 13 May.

Other instances
To date, at least eight other trans people have been murdered in the United States this year. In April, Sasha Wall of South Carolina was found dead in her car after multiple gunshot wounds. Back in March, Amia Tyrae Berryman of New Orleans was found dead with gunshot wounds. Berryman, like Flores-Pavón and many other trans women murdered, were women of color.
In 2017, at least 25 trans people were killed in the United States.
