Ryan Murphy is continuing his domination of the television world.

His brand-new series Pose debuts 3 June on FX. Set in 1980s New York, the eight-episode show explores various aspects of life in the city, including ‘the ball culture world, the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe and the downtown social and literary scene’.

It also happens to boast the highest number of trans actors in series regular roles in a show ever.

This first preview of the series shows characters strutting their best looks and discussing ball culture.

‘At the core it’s about community,’ says one of the characters.

Another adds: ‘It’s about being alone and finding people who are just like you.’

The ballroom community is a subculture community of the LGBTI world in the United States. In its simplest form, it sees people walking, dancing, and posing for trophies and prizes. Many often also experiment with drag and gender fluidity.

Diversity front and center

Evan Peters and Kate Mara star in the show as Stan and Patty, a New Jersey couple. James Van Der Beek will also appear as Matt, Peters’ boss.

However, they’re not why everyone is talking about this series — as seen in the trailer, which features none of them.

The trailer is glamorous, energetic, and set to some really fun music. It places ball culture front and center. It also shows how it was a positive space especially for trans people and people of color within the community.
