18th Century England — Queen Anne is on the throne, and two women vie for the spot at her side. This seductive, over-the-top story is the premise of a new movie and it looks great.

The Favourite tells the story of Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail (Emma Stone) to see who can become, well, the favorite, of the Queen (Olivia Colman).

Sarah is Queen Anne’s closest friend and rules the country in her stead due to Anne’s failing health. When Abigail comes in as a new servant and Sarah takes her under her wing, she sees a new opporunity to rise in the ranks.

The trailer looks absurd and riotous — exactly as it should from Yorgos Lanthimos, director of recent films like The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

In a recent interview at Venice Film Festival, which screened the film, Colman said it was ‘awfully fun’ having sex with Stone.

The film also made GSN’s list of most anticipated LGBTI films coming out of Venice.

As a movie, it looks to reinvent and reimagine the period drama. For Weisz’s, though, it’s not her first foray into queer cinema this year.

Earlier, she co-starred alongside Rachel McAdams in the sensual drama Disobedience, which told a poignant and authentic love story between two women.

The Favourite arrives in theaters on 23 November.
