Pride in Amsterdam is one of the most renowned celebrations of LGBTI rights in the world, as it is the only one on water.
But this year, one boat sailing down the canals was a group of 75 people from Iran.
In Iran, there is no possibility for Pride as being gay can lead to the death penalty.
This is the biggest group of LGBTI Iranians that have ever been allowed to participate in Pride freely.
‘Iranian LGBTIQ’s are facing lots of problems even out of the country. These problems are caused by their family or even some of people are still afraid of Iranian government here in the Netherlands. Some of the participants are wearing a mask because of the fears, threats, and hatred but even though they rather stand up for their rights,’ a spokesperson for Iranian LGBTI group Joopea said.
‘Iran Boat started with no experience in Pride Amsterdam, no available budget, the small group of volunteers or in another hand, from zero ground but here they are just on the track because of the aim of justice for LGBTIQ in Iran and be the voice of who are not able to speak out.’
They added: ‘Iran Boat is here today because they believe in change and the power of solidarity and hope.
‘They are here to announce that we are the one who deserves dignity, justice and liberty like any human being and we certainly are aware that we should stand and to attempt to make our dreams come true.
‘That’s why we are not waiting for that day when we will march in all around Iran but we are fighting to make it happen.’
