Former National Hockey League (NHL) player Georges Laraque slayed a drag competition during an event of Pride Montreal festival on 10 August.

Laraque, who does not identify as LGBTI but has always been an ally, performed Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You.

He lip-synced while wearing a $1,500 bridal gown and sandals, struggling to find heels in his size 14. The former player stands six feet three inches and weighs over 270 pounds.

The Quebecois of Haitian descent played for a variety of teams of the NHL for 14 years, before retiring in 2010.

Georges Laraque is a Canadian national treasure

Laraque tweeted a few pictures of his outfit.

‘Here is my “Drag Queen” look at last night’s @FierteMTLPride that I won thanks to Miss Butterfly’s great work!’ he wrote.

‘In 2018, it is inconceivable that we must all fight against homophobia again. And personally it’s with pleasure that I join this cause!’

Montreal drag star Johnny Naoufal, also known as Miss Butterfly, did his makeup, including purple eye-shadow and sparkling pink lip gloss.

Laraque ended up winning the $1,000 prize for the competition, which he promptly donated back to Montreal Pride.

When the committee of Montreal Pride reached out and asked him to enter the competition, he said the decision was simple.

‘There are many people that still suffer today different types of discrimination just because of their sexual orientation. I think that’s stupid in 2018,’ Laraque told thestar.com.

‘It’s one thing to say you are supportive, but I’ve always liked to do it in action.’

Performing in drag might be a taboo in the sports world

Laraque said dressing in drag still might seem taboo in the sports world where athletes are often worried about maintaining a certain image, but he feels it’s important to challenge those norms.

‘There are things in the world that are more important than worrying about your image all the time. And if public figures don’t take part in the fight, how are things going to change?’ he said.

While he said he’s not sure if he’ll wear the dress again, he took it in for dry cleaning just in case. Better keep an eye out for Montreal Pride parade, happening on 19 August.
