Hayley Kiyoko released a brand new music video today, co-starring fellow out artist Kehlani.

What I Need is the only collaboration on Kiyoko’s debut album, Expectations. The video is an emotional story that celebrates same-sex love — and it’s self-directed by Kiyoko.

The video starts with Kehlani leaving a toxic home and running away with Kiyoko. Their shared love and joy with one another is immediately palpable and infectious.

It’s an unshamed depiction of ‘a love story that illuminates the importance of having someone close to you, who cares for you in times of need without judgment and supports you no matter what’.

Last December, the two singers took a road trip to Ojai, California and that became the setting of the video.

It’s also a pointed portrayal following Kiyoko’s criticism of Rita Ora’s song Girls.

‘I love you more’

Both singers are eagerly sharing the video and the joy of working together.

Kehlani tweeted it’s her favorite video she’s ever done. She then called Kiyoko a ‘genius, an incredible actress and one of the most diligent and hard working directors i’ve ever had the pleasure of working with’.

Then they had this adorable exchange.

Kiyoko’s kicks off the second leg of her Expectations tour tomorrow (1 June).

In July, she’ll join Panic! At The Disco for their Pray for the Wicked tour going through August.
