It is a truth universally acknowledged… that we are always on the hunt for more LGBTQ movies.

Thanks to Amazon Prime Video, soon there will be plenty more to indulge in and watch on repeat.

Coming off the bad PR with their ‘straight pride’ pin, the company is back in good graces with this recent move. They obtained the streaming rights to 64 movies from various Outfest LGBTQ film festivals.

Over the next few weeks, all of these movies will be available to Prime members at no additional cost.

‘These are challenging times for many and reports of violence against LGBTQ citizens are on the rise,’ said Christopher Racster, executive director of Outfest.

However, Racster continued that the ‘power of stories’ can change that narrative.

A bleak reality

Statistics show dismal numbers for LGBTQ representation in film.

GLAAD’s latest annual report of film statistics revealed only 23 out of 125 films released by the major studios in 2016 had LGBTQ characters.

That number is only a one percent increase from 2016 (22 out of 126 films).

Furthermore, most of the representation is limited to gay men (83%). However, 2016 did, at least, see an uptick in the number of lesbian and bisexual characters, even if gay mean still drastically outnumber them. Lesbian representation increased by 12 points to 35%, while bi characters jumped four points to 13%.

Diversity is worsening, though. Only 20% of LGBTQ characters were people of color in 2016, compared to 25.5% in 2015 and 32.1% in 2014.

What are the movies?

Amazon obtained the movies from Outfest, an organization founded by UCLA students in 1982. They work on screening diverse movies worldwide.
