In the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2023 verdict on same-sex marriage, which acknowledged discrimination faced by the LGBTQ community but deferred the decision to the Indian Parliament, the community experienced a profound sense of heartbreak. Despite the recognition of discrimination, the legal doors to celebrating love in union remained closed. Amidst the widespread heartbreak within the LGBTQ community, deprived of the legal recognition of their unions, a glimmer of hope emerged through the love story of Jayashree Rahul (28) and Rakhi Das (23). Hailing from West Bengal, this lesbian couple defied societal norms, celebrating their love in a traditional wedding at the Bhagada Bhavani temple in Bhatpar Rani, Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh.

Amidst the legal complexities and societal challenges, Jayashree and Rakhi’s decision to formalise their commitment in a traditional ceremony carries profound significance. By choosing the Bhagada Bhavani temple as the venue for their wedding, they not only symbolised their love but also became standard-bearers for a broader societal conversation.
The couple faced initial setbacks when their request for marriage was denied at the Dirgeshwarnath temple a few days prior. Mahant Jagannath Maharaj, citing a lack of permission from higher authorities in the district, turned them away.
Undeterred by the initial rejection, Jayashree and Rakhi, accompanied by their well-wishers, charted an alternative course. They obtained a notarised affidavit for their marriage and turned towards the Bhagada Bhavani temple in Majhauliraj.
Choosing the Bhagada Bhavani temple as the setting for their union wasn’t just a personal choice for Jayashree and Rakhi.
