Hulu and Channel 4 acquired a new series about a bisexual protagonist, and what that dating scene is like.
Aptly titled The Bisexual, the six-part series is directed and co-written by Desiree Akhavan. She also stars in the project.
Set in London, the story follows New Yorker Leila (Akhavan). When she goes on a break with her 10-year girlfriend and business partner Sadie (Peake), she moves in with novelist Gabe (Brian Gleeson).
He becomes her wingman as she explores the life of dating both men and women for the first time.
Cecilia Frugiuele co-wrote the series with Akhavan.
The series is set to air on Hulu and Channel 4. Other companies have already bought the series for further territories, like France (Canal Plus) and New Zealand (Sky Network).
Telling personal queer stories
If Akhavan’s name seems familiar, it’s because she’s the director of the recent film The Miseducation of Cameron Post, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, which exposes the realities of conversion therapy in a haunting and authentic narrative.
The film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance earlier this year.
In an interview with GSN, Akhavan, who is openly bisexual, said she wants to see conversion therapy banned universally. The film also led star Moretz to start a docuseries about conversion therapy in the United States.
‘Akhavan) is a singular talent who has lent her distinct wit, authorial voice and unflinching director’s vision to the “last taboo”,’ said executive producer Naomi De Pear.
‘The result is The Bisexual, an intimate, funny and extremely candid portrait of sex and identity.’
