The Human Rights Campaign is honoring Academy-Award winning actor Anne Hathway at their 22nd annual HRC National Dinner next Saturday (15 September).

Hathaway will receive the the HRC National Equality Award.

‘Through her incredible talent and bold activism, Anne Hathaway uses her global platform to stand up for the LGBTQ community,’ said HRC President Chad Griffin.

She has numerous examples throughout her career of supporting the community.

In 2012, she and her husband, Adam Shulman, sold their wedding photos. They donated the proceeds from the sale to efforts helping achieve marriage equality in the United States.

Four years later, she also joined efforts protesting legislation in George allowing LGBTI discrimination. The governor ended up vetoing the bill.

‘I don’t consider myself just an ally to the LGBT community, I consider myself your family,’ she told HRC in 2008. ‘And so, I’m doing what we should all do with our families — I’m loving you, I support you, I completely accept you as you are, as I hope you do me, and if anyone ever tries to hurt you, I’m going to give them hell.’

Making a real difference

Hathaway is also a UN Women’s Global Ambassador, having been appointed in 2016.

Griffin continuned, speaking about the decision to honor her: ‘From speaking out against discriminatory legislation targeting the LGBTQ community to her leadership on workplace equality for women, Anne is making a real difference in the lives of countless people around the globe.’

Hathaway is best known for her roles in the popular teen movie The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada. In 2013, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. It was for her role as Fantine in the movie adaptation of the musical Les Miserables. Most recently, she appeared in this summer’s Ocean’s 8.

Several prominent figures will be in attendance at the dinner.

Both former Vice President Joe Biden and former Attorney General Eric Holder will speak. Virginia delegate Danica Roem will also be there.
