‘It’s bringing people together’: Heartland Pride parade celebrates diversity, inclusion within LGBTQ+ community

THE METRO, THE PRIDE CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE AS HEARTLAND PRIDE BRINGS THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER. THE FESTIVAL FEATURED LGBTQ PLUS VENDORS, COMEDIANS, DRAG SHOWS AND LOCAL ARTISTS. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S DEVIN TAYLOR REPORTS. THE TURNOUT WAS THE LARGEST. THE ORGANIZERS HAVE EVER SEEN. IT’S ACTUALLY BEEN A FEW YEARS SINCE I’VE COME TO THE PRIDE PARADE. UM, THE LAST TIME I WAS HERE, IT WAS FOR MY OLD JOB, AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I’VE BEEN ABLE TO, LIKE, COME BACK AND ACTUALLY BE IN IT AGAIN. AND SO I’M SUPER EXCITED. THE HEARTLAND PRIDE PARADE IS MORE THAN JUST A MARCH. IT’S A STATEMENT OF UNITY AND A CALL FOR ACCEPTANCE. IT’S BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER. IT’S MAKING A SCENE. IT’S MAKING PEOPLE AWARE OF HOW LARGE OUR COMMUNITY IS. AND YOU JUST HOW PASSIONATE EVERYBODY IS AS WELL AS, YOU KNOW, JUST BEING VISIBLE FOR OUR OWN RIGHTS AND EVERYTHING. THE SEA OF RAINBOW FLAGS, COLORFUL COSTUMES AND SMILING FACES AS THE HEARTLAND PRIDE PARADE MADE ITS WAY THROUGH THE STREETS OF OMAHA, PARTICIPANTS OF ALL AGES JOINED IN, SHOWING THEIR SUPPORT. IT’S PRETTY NICE TO SEE EVERYBODY OUT HERE. IT’S NOT SUPER OVERWHELMING. THE SUN IS HOT THOUGH, BUT IT’S BEEN A PRETTY GOOD EXPERIENCE SO FAR. ORGANIZERS SAY THE TURNOUT THIS YEAR WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST THEY’VE SEEN, REFLECTING THE GROWING SUPPORT FOR THE LGBTQ PLUS COMMUNITY IN OMAHA. IT’S REALLY EYE OPENING. IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN AROUND THIS STUFF KIND OF BEFORE, AND IT’S JUST LIKE, IT’S JUST REALLY WELCOMING TO PEOPLE, EVEN IF YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW, LIKE YOUR SEXUALITY, EVEN IF YOU’RE JUST AN ALLY. ‘It’s bringing people together’: Heartland Pride parade highlights the LGBTQ+ community

Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Omaha on Saturday for the annual Heartland Pride parade. The event celebrated diversity and inclusion within the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.”It’s actually been a few years since I’ve come to the pride parade. The last time I was here, it was for my old job. And this is the first time I’ve been able to, like, come back and actually be in it again and so I’m super excited,” said Chelsea Nielsen.The Heartland Pride parade is more than just a march. It’s a statement of unity and a call for acceptance. “It’s bringing people together. It’s making a scene. It’s making people aware of how large our community is and just how passionate everybody is, as well as, you know, just being visible for our own rights and everything,” said Nielsen.It was a sea of rainbow flags, colorful costumes, and smiling faces as the Heartland Pride parade made its way through the streets of Omaha. Participants of all ages joined in, showing their support.”It’s pretty nice to see everybody out here. It’s not super overwhelming. The sun is hot, though, but it’s been a pretty good experience so far,” said Alexa AbercrombieOrganizers said the turnout this year was one of the largest they’ve seen, reflecting the growing support for the LGBTQ+ community in Omaha. “It’s really eye-opening if you haven’t been around this stuff kind of before.
