One of the stars of the gay coming of age film Love, Simon has just released a beautiful queer love song.
Australia actor Keiynan Lonsdale came out to his Love, Simon costars at the film’s wrap party last year. He then told the world he was queer in a moving Instagram post in May, 2017.
But now he’s gone one step further and released a song about love and learning to be open about yourself.
Lonsdale released Kiss the Boy on Thursday (29 March) with MTV calling it the future of queer pop.
‘It’s amazing how hearing someone sing about the person who ignites the fire in their desire while using the pronouns that come naturally to them can change your entire listening experience,’ MTV wrote in its review.
‘For the next generation, this is really the only option if artists are still aiming to be relatable with their material.’
So.. I wrote a song about love, & it’s out now everywhere 🙂 I hope you feel it. #KissTheBoy https://t.co/ysGJmF39Lk 💖🌈 pic.twitter.com/49n3gjfae6

The Little Mermaid inspiration
Lonsdale said he got the idea for the song after seeing the Love, Simon trailer and then a song from Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
‘The teaser for Love, Simon had dropped on YouTube and then for some reason, I don’t know why, the song “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid popped up on my feed,’ he told Billboard.
‘I was like, “Oh, that’s so funny. I wonder if I can do a cover of that song, but change it to about a boy?” It didn’t work, but I was thinking about the Love, Simon trailer and I was really happy. Eventually, I got the hook, “If you wanna kiss the boy/ Then you better kiss the boy right now”.’
The 24-year-old Aussie starred in the Divergent films, TV show Flash, and of course in Love, Simon.
