Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star in the first trailer for A Star Is Born, the third remake of the original 1937 film.

From this first trailer alone, it packs an emotional punch. It also further drives home why it’s one of our most anticipated films of the year.

Cooper directs the film, which is about an aspiring female artist (Gaga) and the seasoned, fading star (Cooper) who helps launch her career.

The original 1937 film was about actors and the world of Hollywood. Judy Garland starred in the first remake in 1954, which transformed the story into a musical.

Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson starred in the 1976, which took on the form of a rock musical.

This remake seems more focused explicitly on the music scene, with Cooper as an older country/indie singer with a drinking problem.

An awards contender?

Every version of this movie has been nominated for — and won — numerous awards.

The original won the Oscar for Best Original Story. It was nominated for another six Academy Awards.

The 1954 musical movie also earned six Oscar nods, though it didn’t win any. However, Garland and James Mason each won the Golden Globe for Best Actress and Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Finally, the ’76 film won Best Original Song at the Oscars. Streisand shared this win as one of the songwriters. She also won the Golden Globe for Best Actress, and the film won three additional Globes.

This newest version is coming out in prime awards season and people are already buzzing about a possible Oscar nomination for Gaga.

Warner Bros. is set to release the film on 5 October in the US and UK.
