LGBTQ Republicans are campaigning for ‘guardrails’ on trans rights

Log Cabin Republicans, a group representing LGBTQ conservatives, has long sought to make the GOP a more inclusive party…with mixed results.

Republican-led state legislatures introduced a record-breaking 510 anti-LGBTQ bills last year. Vice presidential pick JD Vance (whom Log Cabin Republicans called an “incredible pick”) has introduced bills to ban gender-affirming care for minors and remove the “X” gender marker from passports, called LGBTQ people “groomers,” and pledged in 2022 to oppose federal protections for same-sex marriage.

Log Cabin Republicans President Charles Moran joined KNX News’ daily political show Countdown 2024. He framed his organization’s evidently losing battle as a victory.

Listen here:

“For the first time ever, the Republican party platform – in modern history, actually – has no condemnation on gay marriage,” he said. “All of the anti-LGBT language was stripped out of it.”

More accurately, the anti-LGB language was stripped. The platform still targets what it calls “left-wing gender insanity,” supporting various restrictions on the rights of transgender people and threatening to defund schools that engage in “gender indoctrination.”

Shouldn’t a group supposedly representing the LGBTQ community be more concerned about trans rights? According to Moran…no.

“The real issue here is the fact that the radical left has hijacked issues around LGBT rights,” he said. “I believe that 80% of this country is supportive of equality for the L’s, the G’s, the B’s and the T’s, but there has to be some guardrails around that. Issues like protecting women’s spaces, preserving women’s sports and Title IX, parental consent at every level, and no permanent gender transition under the age of 18.”

Moran insisted the GOP is an “inclusive party,” and that LGBTQ voters are just as concerned about issues like “rampant crime” and “free and open borders” as any other demographic.

“The inclusivity that President Trump ran on, not only this time, but even in 2020, this is something where there has been a consistent and demonstrated action to bring LGBT people to the table because they know that our sexual orientation is not the only way we define ourselves,” he said.
