Judy Garland’s daughter, Liza Minnelli, does ‘not approve nor sanction’ the upcoming biopic about her mother.

Judy is an upcoming film detailing the life of the Classic Hollywood starlet. Academy Award-winning actor Renée Zellweger is playing Garland in 1968, a year before her untimely death.

The first photo of Zellweger was released in March to much acclaim and surprise.

She doesn’t get the stamp of approval from Minnelli, however.

Radar Online reported in a now-deleted article that Minnelli and Zellweger were ‘bonding’ over the movie. Minnelli called it ‘100% fiction’ in a Facebook post.

‘I have never met nor spoken to Renee Zellweger…’ she wrote in the post.

‘I don’t know how these stories get started, but I do not approve nor sanction the upcoming film about Judy Garland in any way. Any reports to the contrary are 100% Fiction.’

A Minnelli character will also appear

Minnelli is the oldest of Garland’s three characters. She was born to Garland and director Vincente Minnelli in 1946.

Gemma-Leah Devereux is playing a version of Minnelli in the film.

The film explores a version of Garland that is ‘exhausted; haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood and gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids’. In her final year, she also fell in love with Mickey Deans, her fifth and final husband, played by Finn Wittrock.

The rest of the cast includes Rufus Sewell, Michael Gambon, and Jessie Buckley.

Rupert Goold is directing with a script from The Crown’s Tom Edge.

The movie is set for release later this year.
