Netflix is coming out with a dark take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch this fall. Not only that, it also has some very welcome diversity, such as a pansexual cousin named Ambrose Spellman.
The new series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
It follows a teenaged Sabrina in the 1960s, coming into her own as a witch, with some much darker elements than fans are used to.
English actor Chance Perdomo plays Ambrose and describes his character as a ‘bastardised magical love-child of David Bowie & Jimmy Hendrix’ with a ‘penchant for mischief à la Loki’. Okay, sign us up.
Here’s a look at Ambrose:
So who is Ambrose – and Chance?
Ambrose first appeared in issue #77 of the Sabrina comics in 1971. His first iteration seems him as a plump and middle-aged man, described as Sabrina’s ‘warlock cousin who has an acute sense of fashion and showmanship – or at least thinks he does’.
For the Chilling Adventures, Aguirre-Sacasa re-imagined him as younger, as well as witty and sinister. He never appeared in the popular 90s sitcom, with his wit instead being prescribed to Sabrina’s talking black cat, Salem.
Ambrose is referred to as a witch, though in the comics he states he prefers the term warlock.
In the series, he’s also a necromancer who lives in a funeral home’s attic due to a binding spell.
For Perdomo, this is his highest-profile role in his career yet. Previously, he’s appeared in the British TV movie Killed by My Debt and the series Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators.
He might become quite popular very soon.
Get ready for Sabrina
The Netflix series, initially developed as a spin-off of The CW’s Riverdale, arrives on 26 October.
