Actors Olivia Colman and Emma Stone have spoken to reporters at the Venice Film Festival about their upcoming movie, The Favourite.
The film, which is airing at the festival, features the 44-year-old Colman playing the role of 18th century Queen Anne. It shows the monarch having lesbian affairs with two of her closest female confidants. Emma Stone, 29, plays of of these confidants.
Asked about the depiction of sexual politics in the film, Colman replied: ‘Sexual politics? There was lots of it, and that’s good. That’s timeless, I suppose. That will always happen. It’s as though we think we invented sex, but we didn’t, it’s been going on for quite a long time.
‘And it was awfully fun having sex with Emma Stone.’
‘It was really fun having sex with you too,’ replied Stone, who was sitting on the same panel. ‘It was very comfortable.’ she later said, before adding for clarification, ‘We didn’t really!’

Colman is one of Britain’s best-loved and in-demand actresses, with a string of TV and film credits to her name, including Broadchurch and her award-winning role in 2011’s Tyrannosaur.
A leading role as the older Queen Elizabeth in the next season of The Crown is sure to see her star rise further.
Stone has been nominated for Academy Awards for Stone for her performances in Birdman and La La Land.
The Favourite will also co-star Rachel Weisz as Stone’s rival for Queen Anne’s affections. The movie gets a November release in the US and a January release in the UK.
Critics praised the movie following its premiere in Venice last night. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw singled out Colman’s performance, saying she ‘excels herself’ in the dark comedy.
