FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) – John United Church of Christ supports rural Freeport LGBTQ residents through its annual pride picnic.

On Saturday, dozens of guests gathered at the John United Church of Christ, 1010 S. Park Blvd., to enjoy the third annual Pride in the Park picnic.

“We’re really just celebrating who we already are,” John United Church of Christ pastor, Rachel Kirk says. “It is really powerful to able to be visible and in a rural area.”

Pride Picnic guests enjoyed food, activities for all ages and learned about LGBTQ-friendly organizations in the area.

“Its really powerful to be able to show the LGBTQ community how many people are here who support us and some safe places that wont discriminate against us,” Kirk says. “I’ve been really impressed by how many businesses and groups that want to be here… its gotten a lot bigger compared to last year.”
