CV NEWS FEED // A woman who calls herself an “abortion doula” told a Catholic University of America (CUA) class that men can give “birth” like seahorses.
Pro-abortion and pro-LGBTQ activist Rachel Carbonneau spoke to a CUA class known as “Lifespan Development,” which is part of the school’s psychology department. Its lecturer, Melissa Goldberg, invited Carbonneau. University administration condemned the speech.
In speaking with students, the doula stressed that her company “work[s] with trans [sic] clients.”
“I have some men who have given birth,” she claimed.
“[I]t’s amazing, we call it seahorse birth,” Carbonneau added. “It’s lovely, especially when it’s a water birth; it’s fantastic.”
Also during her CUA speech, she reportedly called abortion “a space I feel comfortable navigating.”
Carbonneau exhorted the class to “just normaliz[e]” the idea that men can become pregnant. She also instructed them to use “gender-neutral language, talking about pregnant men as pregnant people, pregnant women, pregnant men, pregnant humans.”
“It’s not my business as a doula or a human being to pass judgment on how anybody else chooses to live their life,” Carbonneau remarked.
The Daily Signal noted that the “term doula usually refers to a professional who provides physical and emotional support to a woman before, during, and shortly after childbirth.”
“Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, defines an abortion doula as someone who ‘provides physical and emotional support to a patient during their abortion process,’” The Daily Signal reported.

CUA quickly denounced Carbonneau’s visit to campus, stating that the Catholic institution was “appalled to learn about reports regarding” her speech: “It does not reflect our mission and values as a university that is committed to upholding the dignity of life at all stages.”
A CUA nursing student called Carbonneau’s speech “really unsettling.”
“The fundamental point is to understand human development from conception to natural death, right?” he noted in an interview with the Signal. “And they brought in someone who counsels women to terminate life.”
Per the Signal, Carbonneau was a CUA English lecturer from 2005 to 2008. She now serves as the CEO of Family Ways, an “LGBTQ-aligned” doula company she founded.
“I can’t remember a time when I was not passionate about family issues, and particularly family health,” Carbonneau states on her profile page found on Family Ways’ website.
“I am committed to helping families access evidence-based information for informed decision-making, and to helping improve the birth experience for all families,” she continues:
I serve families of all types, and I specialize in trauma-informed care, bereavement support, disability advocacy, and neurodivergence.
…
I founded Family Ways with the intention to help bring such an experience to any individual and family who wants and needs it, and to strengthen the family bond—no matter what shape the family takes. I am honored to have been able to share in the lives of so many beautiful families, if for just this one crucial moment.
Carbonneau is open about her use of the deeply controversial New Age “healing” practice Reiki. Her profile page on her company’s website calls her a “Reiki master.”
In 2009, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) stated that the practice “is not compatible with either Christian teaching or scientific evidence” and that “it would be inappropriate for Catholic institutions … or persons representing the Church, such as Catholic chaplains, to promote or to provide support for Reiki therapy.”

It is a common misconception that male seahorses “give birth” in the same manner as female mammals. Like most other fish, juvenile seahorses hatch from eggs. A female seahorse lays eggs inside a pouch located on the exterior of a male’s body. The eggs are fertilized, develop, and hatch inside of this pouch.
“This does not mean male seahorses become female,” stressed the Signal.
