Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness has bravely discussed his experiences of psychotic depression in a new interview.

The TV star said the episode occurred after the death of his stepfather, and after going ‘cold turkey’ from his medication.

‘I was 25, and I was watching my stepdad pass away from cancer,’ he said. ‘I was in yoga every day, I was in therapy, and I got on and off medication the same year. When I got off of them, I quit cold turkey. It was, like, six months of psychotic depression.’

‘If you do decide to get off, definitely wean yourself off’

Speaking to Time Out, he furthermore added: ‘So, don’t do that. If you do decide to get off, definitely wean yourself off. But the biggest thing about self-care is to be gentle with yourself and remember there’s no one way up that mountain.

‘Maybe don’t take advice from this interview about what you should do with antidepressants, because I don’t know you.’

Jonathan recently referenced his late stepfather on Instagram while discussing the importance of self-care and having a regular ‘self-care Sunday.’

‘My step dad always told me, “no matter where you go there you are,”’ he wrote. ‘Places don’t make us happy, happiness happens when you find it within.’

Praised by critics for his work on Netflix’s reboot of Queer Eye For the Straight Guy, Jonathan is proving one of the breakout TV stars of the year.

He appears as one of the ‘Fab Five’ on the show, taking charge of grooming.
