Sir Ian McKellen has called US President Donald Trump ‘illiterate’.

Asked about the TV legacy of the 45th leader of the US, The Hobbit actor said: ‘He’s so illiterate. He displays his inadequacies every time he opens his mouth, I’m afraid.’

The star made the comments in an interview with CNN.

‘He’s the master of the television, you have to grant him that’

The veteran stage actor furthermore added: ‘And every time he tweets… Dictators and leaders have taken advantage of the mass media ever since it was available to them.

‘Whether it was the radio, advertising, and now television or film. And he’s the master of the television, you have to grant him that… It seems to me, as an outsider, that what he enjoys most in life is not power, but fame.’

McKellen is one of the world’s most famous actors, appearing in the Lord of the Rings and X-Men film franchises. He came out publicly as gay in 1989 in a discussion with Radio 3.

McKellen recently returned to the West End stage in London. He is currently playing King Lear, the titular role from the iconic play by William Shakespeare. Critics have called his performance at The Duke of York’s Theatre ‘magnificent.’
