Ruby Rose has become the latest celebrity to give on up Twitter due to angry trolls.
Rose ditched the social media platform just days after it was announced she’d be playing Batwoman, as comic book fans upset about the casting choice flamed her online.
Some fans raged online that the Australian wasn’t a good enough actress to play the role.
Others argued that Rose wasn’t Jewish like Batwoman’s alter-ego Kate Kane, the Daily Mail reported.
The news of Rose’s casting in the iconic role of one of DC Comics’ foremost LGBTI superheroes made headlines last week.
TV network CW plans to have Batwoman appear in a superhero crossover story in their Arrowverse, the shared universe which includes the shows Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow.
There’s also talk of a solo Batwoman series in the pipeline. If this is commissioned, Rose will be the first actor to play an (openly) gay superhero.
‘Beyond thrilled and honoured’
Last week, Rose spoke of how thrilled she was to receive the role, and wrote of her excitement on Instagram.
‘The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honoured,’ Rose posted.
‘I’m also an emotional wreck… because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on TV and felt alone and different.’
The Australian actress came to the attention of a wider audience with her breakthrough appearance on Orange Is The New Black. She’s went onto star in hits such as John Wick 2 and Pitch Perfect 3.
Her latest blockbuster, The Meg, is in cinemas now.
