Fans of the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe and resident lesbian couple Ruby and Sapphire will definitely be happy with the most recent episode, which aired yesterday (4 July).

It’s a huge development for the two gem characters and, consequently, Garnet.

The show follows a half-human, half-gem boy named Steven. He lives with three gems — Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl — as they work together to protect the universe.

At the end of Season 1, fans found out Garnet is actually a fusion, made up of Ruby and Sapphire. Then, co-executive producer Ian Jones-Quarterly confirmed Ruby and Sapphire are lesbians in a romantic relationship (by ‘human standards and terminology’).

Now, it gets even better.

Asking The Question

Yesterday’s episode, The Question, is one of the most romantic and sweetest episodes yet of the series. And that’s saying something.

Warning: The rest of this article contains spoilers.

After Ruby goes off on a cowboy-like adventure with Steven to find herself, she finds that she misses Sapphire. While talking with Steven, Ruby comes to realization she can be the trail-blazing adventurer and still love someone.

Then she goes back to Sapphire, riding in on a horse during a majestic sunset…

And pops the question!

After proposing, Ruby says: ‘This way, we can be together even when we’re apart. This time, being Garnet will be our decision. What do you say?!’

Sapphire says yes.

‘I wanted to really create an image of a queer couple that makes sense together,’ creator Rebecca Sugar told Variety.

‘Usually the couple is a man and a woman. But you don’t show that love can exist between two men or two women. I wanted to create equal-opportunity love stories for children.’

She also added it was ‘important’ for all the characters to be ‘gender expansive’ and that the intent of the show was to ‘always be very honest’.
