The importance of representation for LGBTQ community in government

Written by

Stephen DeVay, chair of the Monroe County Democratic Committee, sits down with JoDee Kenney to discuss the importance of representation for the LGBTQ+ community in local government.

“I think, in a lot of the same ways that representation is important for all groups, whether it is women, minorities, or LGBTQ, it is important to have that representation because our life experiences tend to be different than that of others who are sitting at that table,” he said. “And that opportunity to share that, to bring your whole self into a conversation, to bring your whole self into a decision or to bring a different point of view is vitally important. And it’s even more important as we’re talking about politics and government and how we’re kind of shaping laws and what’s going to impact our communities.”
