The BBC dropped the trailer for the eleventh series of Doctor Who, the beloved sci-fi series which will now have its first female protagonist.

Broadchurch’s actress Jodie Whittaker will be the time-traveling scientist coming from the planet Gallifrey in the new season.

Announced in July 2017 as the Time Lord’s thirteenth regeneration, the English actress takes on the role after Peter Capaldi, the twelfth regeneration of the character.

A step forward for gender equality for the classic BBC show, which hasn’t failed to cause some controversy. However, despite a minority criticizing the casting, the decision has been received with a warm welcome by many fans who can’t wait for the series.

‘She’s in charge, bro’

The first official trailer for the show premiering on 7 October is out today (20 September).

‘I’m the doctor. When people need help, I never refuse,’ says the iconic character in the trailer.

Spaceships, Star Wars-like dunes, and a clear feminist take, the new series will see Whittaker’s character be in charge of the Tardis for new adventures.

‘I’m just a traveler,’ the Doctor also says.

Will the new Doctor Who be bi?

As the fans weren’t excited enough at the casting, the first female Doctor is also rumored to be bisexual.

Following the announcement last year, Michelle Gomez who plays Missy, the first female version of Doctor Who’s acquaintance The Master, said: ‘Now we have got a female Doctor, so there is going to be girl on girl.’

This not only prompts speculation that the new Doctor is bisexual but that there will also be a same-sex storyline.

Despite the speculation, the trailer doesn’t show any element going in that direction. Whovians will need to wait until October to find out.

The new season of Doctor Who airs on BBC One from Saturday 7 October.
