Batman? Who needs Batman? Certainly not Gotham, when Batwoman is around!
According to Variety, The CW is developing a Batwoman series to add to their ‘Arrowverse’ (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow).
In May, the network announced the character of Batwoman aka Kate Kane will appear in this fall’s annual crossover between the four Arrowverse shows.
Now they’re developing a solo series for Kate, with a premiere date sometime in 2019.
Caroline Dries is writing and executive producing the show. She has a relationship with The CW, having previously worked on The Vampire Diaries and Melrose Place.
Naturally, Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti will also be exec producing, alongside Sarah Schechter. If the show is picked up to series, it will continue Berlanti’s record-breaking reign with 15 series on air at once.
His other CW shows include Riverdale, Black Lightning, and the upcoming football drama All American.
So who is Kate Kane?
Going by the moniker Batwoman, Kate is DC’s first openl gay mainstream hero.
Writer Edmond Hamilton and artist Sheldon Moldoff first created her in 1956, when she was intended as a love interest for Batman. In 1985, the miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earts retroactively established she never existed.
Eventually, DC brought her back in 2006 and made her an out lesbian superhero of Jewish descent.
In 2013, she made history when she proposed to her girlfriend Maggie.
Like other Bat characters, Kate is a highly skilled fighter and detective. She also uses high-tech equipment and weapons.
Kate appeared in the animated movie Batman: Bad Blood in 2016, where she was allowed to be an openly out character.
Last year, DC earned an award from GLSEN for their LGBTI diversity work, including characters like Kate.
